I am listen to them now as I write this. It's 8:30a and they are still feeding on leaves and howling until their 10:00a nap. Howler monkeys are new world monkeys that average 22 to 36 inches in height, although they rarely stand up, and they live between 15 and 20 years in the wild. Howler monkeys normal stay in trees and only come to the ground in rare instances. Howler monkey have a tail about 30 inches long, unlike old world monkeys which have no tail. Howler Monkeys get their name from their unmistakable call or howl that they use to claim their territory and let other howler monkey troops know where they are feeding or sleeping. A Howler Monkey's diet consist of leaves, flowers and fruits. During the dry season they mostly eat leaves which are higher in toxins, causing the howler monkeys to slow down even more. They spend most of the day eating and sleeping, and they sleep all through the night. Howler Monkeys live in a small geographical region rarely traveling more than a kilometer or two and for this reason the destruction of the forest and breeding coridors is threatening their survival.
